Created by Zeus, king of the gods, antmen were some of the fiercest fighters in all of Greek mythology. With the savagery, agility and discipline of worker ants-and the strength of humans-these insect-warriors were said to defeat any army that dared to battle them. Given an order by their leader, the antmen would rush into any fight without fear of death.

Secret Weapon: If a human opponent matched an antman's skills with swords, the beastly insect still had an advantage. The giant bug could reach in and crush a soldier's skull with its huge jaws.

Armed and Antsy[]

Antmen Back Image

When real ants attack, they take no prisoners.

After a plague wiped out the population on the island of Aegina, the king there begged his father, who happened to be Zeus, to repopulate his kingdom by turning its ants into people. Noticing that, like ants, the antmen were fierce and eager warriors, the king's son, Peleus, took a group of them to the Greek city of Thessaly. The antmen stayed loyal to Peleus and to his son, Achilles, who led the creatures to battle in the legendary Trojan War.

Big Picture: An antman's large, red eyes could see in almost all directions at once. This all-around vision gave the warrior-beasts the ability to fight several enemies at once.

In the Army: Ants are considered among the best-organized insects and would be perfect to serve as soldiers in an army. There is even a species of ultra-fierce insects called "army ants."

Get the Raid![]

When the Greeks attacked the ancient city of Troy, antmen were among the first into battle. The beasts scaled the city's fortified walls in mass numbers and worked together, much like real ants do. The first on the scene locked their bodies on top of each other so other warriors could climb to the top of the walls and infiltrate the city of Troy.

Trading Card[]

Trivia[]

  • The knowledge card says Antmen. The trading card says Antman.
  • There were no creatures actually known as "antmen" in Greek mythology. The creature is likely based on the story of the Myrmidons, who were ants transformed into human warriors. However, the Myrmidons were consistently described as entirely human, not the humanoid ants depicted in Weird 'n Wild Creatures.
  • This card is one of two to mention the film Them!, along with Giant Ants.
  • The title on the back, "Get the Raid!", references the real world pest control brand of the same name.
  • The Antman is featured in Literary Legends on Monster Mania 73.
