Anyone traveling in the deep woods of Eastern Europe must beware of one of the most powerful witches in the world-Baba Yaga. This fictitious old hag knows of spells that can stop people in their tracks, and can even command animals and the weather. Baba Yaga loves people-eating them, that is. She lays in wait for unwary passers by.

Power of the Dark Side: With loads of powerful spells at her disposal and a command over animals, Baba Yaga is a powerful witch. She often casts a spell on victims to paralyze them, then sends a pair of birds to carry them into her lair.

Don't Come Knockin': Baba Yaga lives deep in thick forests, preying on travelers. When someone who's lost in the woods stumbles upon her eerie cabin, he or she knocks on the door to seek help, but often ends up in the witch's oven as her next meal.

Baba Yaga enlisted ravens to help with her evil deeds.

Once in a while, the evil Baba Yaga shows mercy on victims and makes a deal with them: She'll let them live-and even help them with a problem-if they'll gather ingredients for her potions from dangerous locations. In one story, a woman named Vasilisa was sent into the woods by her nasty stepmother and was captured by Baba Yaga. The witch sends the girl on several difficult tasks; Vasilisa is brave and completes them. Baba holds up to her end of the deal and gives the girl a magic skull, which turns her evil stepmother to ash.

Mobile Home: This powerful witch cast several spells on her small home, giving it wings so it can fly from place to place, and when it lands it rests on four chicken legs. The cabin is decorated with the bones of her past victims, often with skulls hanging from her door.

Floater: When Baba Yaga travels through the woods, she floats in a mortar (a ceramic bowl) and paddles along with a giant pestle (a heavy club used to grind things). She attaches a broom to the back to sweep away her tracks so nobody can follow her.

Baba Bing[]

While out searching for ingredients one day, Baba Yaga finds a little girl wandering near her spooky home. The witch hasn't eaten in a while, and gets hungry at the sight of the child. The girl tries to run, but Baba chases her down in her floating mortar and makes the skulls atop her fence hypnotize the victim. The girl is soon in Baba Yaga's clutches, and will be eaten if she can't escape.
